New Health and Social Care Secretary Victoria Atkins has spoken about the challenges facing the NHS in a speech to the NHS Providers conference in Liverpool.

Speaking via video message, Ms Atkins discussed winter pressures and industrial action, underlining her commitment and belief that strong partnerships are essential to future success.

Ms Atkins said: “We have got a lot of work to do. As we continue to bed-in the reforms government brought forward last year to create strong and integrated care systems across England.

“This will be a shared endeavour. And it will require all of us to work in partnership. Across our acute hospitals, mental health, community, general practice, and pharmacy.”

Ms Atkins explained that this collaborative outlook is how she will also approach industrial action, adding: “I’m acutely aware of how the strikes have disrupted patient care, and I’m committed to getting around the table.

“I want to see a fair and reasonable resolution. This winter will be challenging, but I know that rising to such challenges is what you all do so well.” Read the speech in full on the Government’s website.
