What Is Gynaecology?

Gynaecology is a medical specialty dedicated to the health and well-being of the female reproductive system. Gynaecologists are doctors specifically trained to diagnose, treat, and manage conditions affecting the ovaries, uterus, cervix, vagina, and fallopian tubes.

NHS Gynaecology Services

The NHS provides a wide range of gynaecology services to support women’s reproductive health. These services cover areas such as menstrual issues, menopause, contraception, fertility, early pregnancy concerns, and gynaecological cancers. Care is delivered through a combination of primary care (GPs), secondary care (hospitals), and specialist clinics, ensuring patients receive the right support at every stage.

Menopause and HRT pathways

A GP, nurse or pharmacist can give you advice and help with your menopause or perimenopause symptoms.

There are also menopause specialists who have experience in supporting anyone going through perimenopause and menopause.

Talking therapies like counselling or CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) can help with symptoms of menopause and perimenopause. You can get NHS talking therapies without seeing a GP first.

Unexpected bleeding on HRT

We know that unexpected bleeding while taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be worrying. However, it’s important to remember that in most cases, this symptom is not linked to anything serious—and the risk of cancer is very low.

To support women experiencing this, we’ve introduced a new care pathway that offers fast and appropriate assessment. This may include some simple tests to help understand the cause of the bleeding and, in many cases, allows us to adjust your HRT for better symptom relief and reassurance.

If you’re currently using HRT and notice any unexpected bleeding, please speak to your GP. They can refer you into this pathway so you get the right care and support as quickly as possible.
