As we approach the Christmas holidays, the NHS is seeing more people infected with winter viruses, including increasing numbers of people in hospital with flu and COVID-19.

The health and care system across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent is urging vulnerable people to get the vaccinations they are entitled to ahead of festive gatherings and potential super-spreader events.

Matthew Missen a, Public Health Consultant at NHS Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care Board, said: “Christmas is a time for family and friends, but it can also be a time when viruses spread rapidly as people socialise more indoors. Getting vaccinated with a flu and or COVID-19 vaccination is the best was to protect yourself and vulnerable loved ones and ensure you all stay well. Check in with older relatives, those with long-term health conditions or any family member who is pregnant to see if they are up to date with these important vaccinations.

“Don’t let illness spoil your Christmas celebrations and get vaccinated to stay well this winter. Vaccinations are available now at GP practices and pharmacies.”

Stephen Gunther, Corporate Director of Public Health at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: “The colder weather means we are seeing increases in the number of people with conditions like flu and RSV and getting vaccinated helps protect against serious illnesses and boosts your immunity.

“Christmas is nearly upon us and the increased socialising indoors with family and friends increases the risk of these viruses spreading and more residents getting hospitalised. It is so important to get vaccinated, so I encourage everybody who is eligible to have their vaccines and don’t miss out on enjoying the festivities.”

Paul Northcott, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Support Member for Public Health and Integrated Care, said: “This is always the busiest time of the year for the NHS, so it is important with the holidays coming up, that we all play our part to protect ourselves and our loved ones from infections.

“If you’re eligible, make sure you get all your vaccines, including flu, COVID, and RSV. If you haven’t had your flu vaccine yet, check with your local pharmacy to see if they can do it.

“Washing your hands often and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze, also helps stop the spread of germs.”
